Justin and Brighton were making "a balloon," as the kids would call it, in the family room. Daisy was crawling around trying to see what all the fuss was about.

Brighton is in the Chandler School District attending Ryan Elementary. I was originally going to move both he and Adaira to a nearby Charter school but Brighton tested into the gifted program for Chandler so I kept him in. The CATS (Chandler Academically Talented Students) program is more advanced than the accelerated program at the charter school, so I wanted to give it a chance. Unfortunately Adaira wasn't tested in time and when I found out Brighton was in I called and asked to have her tested but all the CATS classes were already full. For now, Adaira is attending the charter school and Brighton is at another school. It makes for a lot of driving, although their schools are only just over a mile apart, but neither have bus service for them so I'm doing all the picking up. I know lots of parents do that but I've always opted for the bus in the past to avoid the craziness of the after school pick up lines. Oh well....

I'm so sad that my picture of Brighton's first day of school got deleted off the camera somehow. Maybe I thought I had already uploaded it, but it's gone. So here is another recent picture of him for good measure. He is loving his new class and being in CATS. I think he feels a lot of pride at being "gifted". Brighton has had some trouble making friends in the past and admitted that he liked to sit and read during recess. Reading is great and I'm glad he enjoys it that much (he would typically read for at least 45 minutes every night too, until I forced him to turn his lamp off) but I was worried that he wasn't making friends and said as much to his teacher at the time. She would just say that "gifted" students often had that problem (he wasn't in a gifted class then) and seemed to brush it off, which didn't help . This year after the first week of school he proudly proclaimed "I already made one friend and it's only been one week!" I felt so happy for him and also sad for him. Sad that it's his fourth year of school and making a single friend in a week was such an accomplishment. Compare that to Adaira who came home from her first day of school as confident as can be telling us she had five best friends and spouted off all their names. Those two are sure different, but I must say I am so grateful that Brighton has made a friend, and hopefully he can make a few more by the time the year is over! There is another kid in his class who's family used to be in our ward before it split, so I'm hoping to have him over to help Brighton reconnect with him (he doesn't remember him because their play-dates were over four years ago...)
